To borrow a line from the Clash's Should I Stay Or Should I Go, "This indecision's buggin' me." In order to start out this post right, a little Fred Dalton Thompson quiz must be taken. When was the first date Fred Thompson publicly announced that he was considering a run at the presidency in 2008?
A) March 11, 2007 B) April 11, 2007 C) May 11, 2007
The answer is A, March 11, 2007, on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace.
We are now under two weeks away from the six month anniversary of Thompson’s announcement he was considering getting into the race, and here’s what’s transpired at Team Thompson.
- April 4 – Fred gives a speech in conservative hotbed of Orange County, California to the Lincoln Club. Speech is fine on substance, but he gives a lackluster delivery.
- April 11 – Fred announced on Fox News to Neil Cavuto he has non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
- May 09 - Talk is now about Fred 2.0, trying to improve on public speaking skill demonstrated at Lincoln Club the week before.
- May 21 – Fred dissolves his Senatorial PAC and hires former George H.W. Bush staffer Tom Collamore as campaign manager of the campaign that doesn’t exist yet.
- May 30 – Inside sources tell Politico’s Mike Allen that Fred will officially jump into the race over July 4th weekend.
- June 01 – Fred announces exploratory “testing the waters” committee.
- June 03 – Fred gives speech to Virginia GOP in Richmond. Former Dick Cheney staffer Mary Matalin announces she’s joining the campaign that doesn’t exist yet.
- June 13 – Fred appears on Tonight Show and tells Jay Leno while he’s never craved the office of president, there are things he wants to do that can only be done as president.
- June 27 – Fred tells crowd at GOP luncheon in South Carolina, “We'll be talking about that later, not today, but not too long.”
- July 11 – Carl Cameron reports on Fox News that his sources say an August announcement by Thompson saying he’s running is likely. Mike Allen of Politico gets a more cryptic answer from a Thompson staffer – “When FDT is ready to announce.”
- July 15 – Fred adds staff to communications and a political director.
- July 17 – Rumors are that Fred definitely won’t announce anything official in July.
- July 24 – After 65 days on the job, Tom Collamore is out as the campaign manager of the camapaign that doesn’t exist yet. Randy Enwright would take over.
- July 25 – J.T. Mastranadi quits as head of research for the campaign that doesn’t exist, citing lack of structure.
- July 27 – Fred appears on Hannity & Colmes, and says a final decision on whether he’s running or not will be made soon, 139 days after he first hinted to Chris Wallace he was considering the run for the presidency. Team Thompson also loses Tom Frechette, formerly the deputy under Tom Collamore as campaign manger of the campaign that doesn’t exist.
- August 07 – Fred website 2.0 launches.
- August 08 – Bill Lacy takes the reins as campaign manager for the campaign that still doesn’t exist. Rumors of a post-Labor Day announcement surfaces as Fred prepares for first arrival in Iowa.
- August 20 – Burson Snyder resigns as spokeswoman, citing a desire to find a better professional fit.
- August 27 – Communications director Linda Rozett is fired. Rozett is understood to be the reason why Burson Snyder resigned just a week earlier.
- August 30 – Todd Harris is hired to replace Linda Rozett in communications. Team Thompson makes announcement that Fred will make official announcement on September 6th, by way of webcast. If Senator Thompson keeps this date, it will be exactly 180 days after he first publicly hinted he was thinking about it.
There are many downsides to having a presidential campaign begin in earnest this far out in front of Election Day, as it has in this cycle. Voter fatigue is surely going to occur along the way. But if there is one positive note about such a long campaign cycle, it’s to see how effective each candidate is at managing their campaigns. Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have run the best campaigns thus far on the Republican side, and you have to give Hillary Rodham Clinton credit. Her campaign is literally a machine that should be studied and emulated for generations to come. Fred Thompson, however, does present the Republican voter concerns over such a turbulent summer with key officials in an under-the-radar campaign coming and going, many of them citing lack of structure as the reason for their departure. That doesn’t exactly imbue the average voter with confidence that a Thompson administration will hit the ground running in 2009, especially during wartime.
Another aspect of a long campaign cycle is you get to see more opportunities to see how candidates make decisions. And here, Republican voters can judge all of the leading contenders, but again, the one person that sticks out the most for analysis is Fred Thompson. Perhaps the most important decision a presidential has to make is the most obvious one – the decision to enter the race. And while many Beltway pundits will debate the strategy that Thompson has employed thus far to time the entry into the race, trying to raise money below the radar, capitalizing on the television celebrity without having to discuss issues in a debate format, giving opponents ammunition, the perception of the average voter, after six months of hearing that Thompson is getting in the race, is he begins to sound like the boy who cried wolf. When he finally does announce, if he does, there is not going to be the initial excitement and bump in the polls that a candidate usually hopes for.
Fred Thompson was an able Senator, a solid conservative, by all accounts a good guy, but his decision-making skills are questionable at best. If a crisis occurs during a Thompson administration, one would expect him to be able to make instant decisions and stick by them, not kick the can down the road until you put together a support team you’re finally comfortable with in order to formally announce six months later that you’re ready to finally make your official announcement a week and a half later. The world doesn’t work that way anymore. Being president in the 21st Century requires real time assessment, and real time decisions being made. Unfortunately, Fred Thompson has not shown he has this skill set. He might possess it, but he’s done a lousy job so far of showing it.
Yes, I can also see "questionable decision making" Duane.
For instance, I was wondering how a writer in the 21st century would completely dismiss contractual commitments of an actor as it pertains to campaign election law...and then there's this headache I get when I try to understand the relationship of choosing the remnants of available campaign staff with the appointments of a U.S. Cabinet. The next one is a real corker though. I actually have a pinpoint pain in my, well, lets just say I'm having difficulty with knowing that on several occasions Fred has defined his unwillingness to run the typical "phrenetic" campaign inthat his emphasis of relaying his message to the country would be utlizing the internet to reach nearly half of the country everytime he blogs, tapes audio or video clips...with no fly-in-the-ointment reporters, anchors OR writers skewing the message. Fred is truly pioneering the entire process as we knew it. He's daring to go where no candidate has gone before, however, they'll be trying to imitate his blueprint in every state and local election to come while Hillary will be home watching soaps and eating bon-bons. Therefore, my continuing difficulty in appreciating your decision to compare the management of this campaign with any other and the situations that have arisen with experienced staffers whom are used to running a "normal" campaign and their ability to adapt to what they may view as "lack of structure". With a campaign that doesn't exist he is running in the lead or a close second in nearly every poll...that's quite an accomplishment for a campaign that doesn't exist...wouldn't you agree Duane?

Not to mention Duane's tone of "Oh, I'm so annoyed; poor me; he's not getting in now? Oh, man! Now who will I obsess over?"
Duane, the man will run when he runs, and then evaluate him, and vote.
Y'all go overboard with this breathless over-analysis. Take a load off. The world ain't gonna end because Fred took more time.
And while you're taking that time, look at a Romney and Guiliani chronology while you're at it. It's a lot longer than six months before they declared, methinks. |

scenes?........What if he announces with Newt standing beside him as a running mate, makes it clear that Duncan Hunter will be their Sec of Defense, and Tom Tancredo to be the Director of Homeland Security?............All of MSM would be on TRANQUILIZERS within 24 hours! |

Thompson enters with high name ID - Good Seeming little coherent organzation national or in key states - Very Bad Little cash on hand - Very Bad Two highly organized and well funded opponents who have resources to take him apart - Bad No executive experience, tangible accomplishments and some suspect past relationships - Bad and maybe Very Very Bad
and the list goes on.
to win Thompson not only has to accomplish a lot in a short time but count on his opponents making major mistakes. Doable? Maybe but odds are definitely against him |

I like the guy, lots of people do, but I'll take a pass on him unless he prevails.
I can't stand that he has remained on the sidelines during the most heated time that I can remember as a Republican. That he has chosen to sit this out, for so long, means something to me: he either doesn't get how important this coming election is or doesn't want to tip off how weak his candidacy is. I feel it's the latter.
There is a certain cowardice/temidity about someone jumping into this so late, when the fight is nearly over. All he has to do is survive four months and he may very well be in; the others have had to weather six to eight months of intense criticism and attention and questioning.
How is it possible that he will be prepared, after only a few months, to withstand the attention of Hillary or Obama? The answer: he won't. He'll fall flat on his face if we select him. He's been on the sidelines for the same most people are on the sidelines: they're not good enough to be in the game. On many levels we already know this, and he probably knows this also. |

Duane, you and some other Thompson critics hold that it's all about indecision. While this theory may make you feel better, it has no basis in fact. The decision was made to enter the race a long time ago, but because of the arcane rules and regulations governing elections, Fred's folks have not been able to say so.
By waiting until September 6 to formally declare his candidacy, Thompson won't have to disclose any campaign cash donations to Friends of Fred until January 31. By that date some important GOP preliminaries will be over and done with, including the caucuses in Iowa and Nevada, as well as primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan and Florida, the latter a state that Team Thompson has has identified as one of its most important targets.
We've seen what happened with Thompson's earlier disclosure that he raised $3.5 Million in his testing-the-waters campaign's first 26 days. Significantly, that amount is more than ten times greater than what Rudy Giuliani managed to raise in the first month of his campaign's exploratory phase, and it's more than all of the lower-tier GOP candidates were able to raise added together. Burt this was spun by the lib media and Fred opponents as a "failure to meet expectations." It's become a key part of their anti-Fred mantra because some of Fred's backers had mentioned a fundraising target of $5 Million.
1So perhaps now you can understand why Friends of Fred picked September 6, 2007, of all days, to make Fred's official announcement. It's the earliest possible date which allows Fred to get in the race, yet not have to disclose how much he raised in donations until the end of January. Having been burned by the media and the opposition, who turned his fundraising success story into a sad tale of disappointment, they are following the "Won't get fooled again" strategy. |

Look, stick to the positive about Mitt and STOP runnin' down my guy! Your guy is gonna make it or not- but runnin' Fred down all the time ain't gonna help ole Mitt. Remember Reagan's 11th commandment!
And stop tryin' to pi** off us Frednecks!
FDT the next POTUS! Yeah baby! |

For the 1st time in a long time I have FAITH in a politician. 1. Fred is not a professional politician. This speaks loads to me.. The professionals got us where we are today. 2. Strong federalist views. Putting the role of government with the people which is where it should be. 3. Strong stance on immigration. 29% of our jails are housing illegal aliens...Some Hispanic gangs upwards of 60% illegal aliens... 4. 2nd Amendment he will protect our rights as legal, responsible citizen gun owners... 5. As for waiting to get on the DOGPILE. Very wise, a lot of us wanted him to declare; now that he has made a thorough analysis he has made his decision and put his team in place. He will hit the ground running... 6. I believe Fred will appeal to many who will cross party lines due to his common sense and approach to everyday problems facing this country. Finally, FOR THE REST OF THE CLOWNS THEY HAVE BEEN PREPARING FOR THIS THEIR ENTIRE ADULT LIVES!!! I would rather have someone with the NADS to admit they don't want to be President but they have no other way to correct the travesty that has become our political process… AND AS FORREST SAID "THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT" |

Indecision ? ? ? ?
Fred Thompson will officially announce his campaign for POTUS on Sept. 6, 2007, in just 6 days in September wjich has been the month TRADITIONALLY that most campaigns have "officially announced" in the past elections, SO FOR CRYING OUT LOUD WHATS THE DEAL ? ? ?
With to days Internet, blogs every where, automated phone banks, Instant text-messaging, e-mail, "You-Tube & CUBE-TV" type NON-TRADITIONAL Video posting, advertising & reporting the "MAIN STREAM MEDIA is just going NUTS because Fred Thompson REFUSES to let THEM, the MSM, dictate the timing of, the ebbs & flows if you will, of his pending "OFFICIAL" campaign for POTUS in 2008...
CLINTON, OBAMA, EDWARDS, MCCAIN, ROMNEY, GULIANI, and the rest of the candidates started their campaigning WAY TO EARLY and many people are getting "SICK" of the artificially & ABNORMALLY pro-longed campaign season created by them this time...
Yeah, Fred only raised 3.6 miilion in the month of June...
But, wait, it is now September and we have YET to determine what money was raised in the 60+ days of July & August so that argument is mute...
Likewise the above mentioned candidates have been SPENDING MILLIONS$ of campaign funds like WATER for the last 6-9 months in most cases where as FRED THOMPSON has spent very little in the "testing the waters" stage of the pre-campaign, organizing and gathering a nationwide campaign team & staff while he has also been RAISING MILLIONS$ instead of spending them like the rest...
VERY VERY SMART and RIGHT ON TIME if you ask me... |
|
Fred has defined his unwillingness to run the typical campaign..
He did not run the typical campaign in Tennessee when he won his seat in the Senate by the most overwhelming victory in the states history.
I would hope he does not run the typical B.S. campaign... With all the canned response and looking to the teleprompter for what to say next!
GO FRED GO!!! |

"Why Fred waited. Duane, you and some other Thompson critics hold that it's all about indecision. While this theory may make you feel better, it has no basis in fact. The problem has been that neither Fred nor his organization has ever put out clear reasons for the delays. You have your explanation, while other Fred supporters have theirs. At Free Republic it's all about the "Law and Order" epidodes, contractual obligations, and FEC equal time considerations if Fred announced before the last L&O episode had run this summer.
Fred supporters have offered various explanations, while Fred and his campaign have offered nothing official.
The notion that the delays have been to avoid some finance report seem odd, since the delays have doubtless cost Fred millions in contribution from people not willing to contribute until Fred had made the formal announcement and commitment to run.
Maybe he'll be a strong candidate and all this will be forgotten, but if he and his campaign continue to appear indecisive and disorganized, he'll sink like a rock.

everything else doesn't matter. This is where we see if there really are that many Fredheads. |

If he can't raise enough cash to compete ? ? ?
Fred Thompson's organization in the first 26 days of the "testing the waters" ppart of Fred's "pre-campaign" raised 3.7 million$$$ while spending an estimated $300,000 which was pretty DARN GOOD compared to those millions spent by Rommney, Guliani, McCain, Clinton, Obama & Edwards...
That my friend swas very SMART & SAVY business move on Fred Thompsons part as well...
Its funny that for a man who unlike Rommney who can "bank roll" his own campaign with his own millions$$$, That FRED THOMPSON rased considerably much more money in those FIRST @^ DAYS tahn Clinton, McCain, Obama, Guliani, or Edwards and is STILL being "POOR MOUTHED" by the MSM....
YEP, the MSM doesn't like to be PROVEN WRONG so they will continue attacking FRED with these STUPID NON-ISSUES & FALSE ACCUSATIONS hoping that something will stick...
HOW PATHETIC THE MSM, and their menion, ARE... |

Ex-Tex, there's no use quoting that commandment to Romney; he's no Republican. He's a deep- pocketed opportunist. His so-called plan for MA health care will be another Big Dig. His sudden epiphany on abortion seems remarkably coincident with his plans to go national. His feigned second amendment support has been one of the saddest political jokes this season. He presided as governor while his state became the only one in the nation to allow homosexuals to claim the legal status that every civilization since the dawn of time has reserved for the union God created between men and women. His camp and Giulian's have been afraid of Fred since this whole thing began; their dirty tricks have barely even started. |
|
During this political season everyone seems so concerned how Fred is "waiting" so long to announce. Is he just on the normal time schedule for announcing, or is he actually late to the dance?
When did the candidates announce in the days before the Clintons, "all politics all the time attitude"? It seems the neo-Libs have been running for '08 since "W" won in 2004. I'm sick of the spew coming from guys like Shumer, Levin etc.
Thats all I have to say...LOL |

Way to go, Duane!
Esta undecision me molesta! |

to be the most boring public speaker on the stage.
Listening to him give his speeches this summer has been painful.
