From this morning's Morning Joe on MSNBC with Mika Brzezinski.

I'm not going to use the word conspiracy, but I think there's a conspiracy out to get me.

I'm calling this press conference to say I'm not going to run any negative ads, but if I were to run negative ads, this is what they would look like.

I wonder if South Carolinians are going to see a pattern here with Governor Huckabee.  And by the way, conspiracies are usually done in secret.  The attacks are not on Governor Huckabee himself but on his non-conservative record as governor in Arkansas, and his very disturbing views on foreign policy.  And the attacks are very public.  There's no conspiracy about it, and it frankly makes Huckabee look a little thin-skinned in seeing criticisms as conspiracies.

Huckabee's frequent slips
Today on FOX Fred Thompson was talking about an attack made by the Huckabee campaign against him, in S.C. Fred noticed the Huck seems to avoid going after McCain regardless of the fact that he (McCain) is in the lead in S.C. with Huckelberry running a close second. Fred observed that Huck appears to be McCain's "stalking horse" in the campaign, a fairly astute observation in my opinion since I firmly believe that the Huckster is looking long term for a position on the ticket with McCain. Watch and see if they don't remain on good terms with one another throughout the S.C. primary. Huck knows McCain's ego is too big to allow him to choose a running mate who had previously been critical of his (McCain's) positions! No Ronald Ragan is he! (McCain).

Well, Huck knows about conspiracies
His Church has been indoctrinating its members against Mormonism for at least 25 years. It wasn't much of a trick to send Evangelicals the hint that they shouldn't vote for a Mormon, since they've all been told that the LDS church is a cult, not Christian, yadda, yadda, yadda.

If Romney is the nominee, you can expect the Democrats to attack his church, and they'll find all the material they want in writings published by Evangelical churches.

Huck's real problem is that the groupthink promoted by him and his fellow Baptist ministers hasn't overcome the understanding among the Religious Right that what matters is character, ability and experience, not denomination.

He started out on my short list, but when it became clear that he was pushing populism, attacking Romney as an elite, rather than a man of achievement, I lost a lot of respect for him. Now it looks as though he was avoiding attacks on McCain in hopes of being invited to be VP. That's just sad.

There's a conspiracy all right. It's called intelligent Republican voters.
